Life is good here, half an hour north of the birthplace of Laura Ingalls Wilder. I continue to play music and give a square dance at the Pepin festival each year. It's lots of fun. Our home had a severe flood this year, so life has been a challenge, just like it was in the old days. If it rains it pours, as Caroline would say.

I am working on a new cd recorded by Dakota Dave Hull. It should be out sometime in the coming year. My new favorite traditional tune to play on guitar is Lily Dale, which Pa played on his fiddle for the girls one Christmas.

Thank you, Sue.

Lily Dale. I can't recount right now. Probably know the tune. How again did it go? Laughing

And Good Luck with your new CD. How many CDs did you make so far?

Please keep us informed and updated.

Hi, Old Rein! Lily Dale is a sad lament played on fiddle in G. It is a song that has been used as a waltz and also as a schottische in its various forms.

It is hard to describe the tune but it can be found in the little house songbook and online.

I have self-published 6 cds. THis will be my first professional cd, and it will have other musicians on it as well. Thank you!

How is your own little farm with all the chickens coming along, Sue?

Sue, you need a picture here! Do you have one yourself to put in or do you have a suggestion what you would like for an avatar?

Weil es fuer Sue West schwierig ist, bei uns ins Forum zu kommen, da sie doch garkein Deutsch kann, will ich ihre e-mail-Neujahrs-Wuensche an uns alle hier uebermitteln. Sie schreibt:

Hello and Happy New Year!

I have had a busy year being a Mom, a bookkeeper for the family business, and a working musician. I had alot of lessons too, focusing on guitar technique and music theory with Walter Croll at Brickhouse, on flatpicking guitar with Chris Silver, on traditional Tuvan overtone singing with Steve Sklar, and I also took banjo and mandolin lessons this fall. I purchased a new mountain dulcimer last year and have been playing that some, and I use the autoharp a bit for recording and performing certain songs, so I have branched out some musically and I enjoy that alot. I have been working all year on recording a cd at Arabica Studios with Dakota Dave Hull. Dave is a world class musician and it has been a wonderful education working with him. The tracks with other musicians are being added now and they are sounding great.

I had lots of special gigs this year, the pic attached is from the St. Paul Farmer's Market. I enjoyed work with my groups, the Rush River Ramblers, Kinni Song Sisters, and Strictly Traditional String Band. Some highlights were the square dances, playing at Earth Angels' Coffee in River Falls, and venturing up to Brainerd to play warmup for a house concert with Dakota Dave. With the help of some good neighbors I hosted a house concert for Dakota Dave, and Duck Baker of Reading, England, who is a very prominent fingerstyle guitar player. I also organized and hosted musical benefits for the Japanese Tsunami / New Zealand earthquake survivors, and for Rush River Lutheran Church.

Gardening used to be a big part of our life here. We have not been able to do much of that. But we did re-institute the farm business by making up a big batch of beeswax products and selling them this fall, and we were glad to get more orders for those last week. So that is a start. We still have two hens that came back after the flood, and they are being spoiled rotten.

Our wishes for a happy, successful, healthy, and positive year ahead...may all good things find their way to your door!

Sue West
